Nuisance Wildlife Control in Hillsborough County - RATS

Rats are known to spread at least 35 different diseases to humans and animals, including Salmonellosis, Bubonic plague and Leptospirosis. Rats can also transport mites, lice, fleas and ticks.

As the weather cools, rats may seek the warmth of our homes to build their nests. Enclosed spaces such as attics, wall voids, utility closets, spa and pool heaters, and appliances are ideal locations for nesting rats, as are untrimmed palm trees, dense shrubbery and wood or rock piles. Signs that rats may be present include droppings and urine stains, gnawed or chewed-up piles of paper, and rub marks along walls, doors, and gates. Rats may also find an ample supply of food in areas adjacent to our homes. While rats are omnivorous, they are especially attracted to citrus fruit and pet food. Hollowed-out rinds of oranges or grapefruits are a sure sign that rats have been feeding. Pet foods left outdoors and uncovered become an easily accessible food source. Rats also need water on a daily basis and potted plants, birdbaths, and fountains all offer drinking sources.

Property owners can help eliminate rats by limiting their access to food, water, and shelter. Some of the steps that the District recommends to exclude rats include:

  • Trimming shrubs 12” from ground level and trees away from the roofline and other structures.
  • Removing fallen leaves from the base of oleanders and other bushes.
  • Storing firewood on racks and with 12 to 18 inches between the wood and structures.
  • Bringing pet food indoors at night and storing in tightly sealed containers.
  • Harvesting ripe fruits and removing fallen fruit on a daily basis.
  • Keeping trash containers tightly sealed.
  • Weather stripping all exterior doors and inspecting clothes dryer vents.
  • Sealing all opening on exterior walls and openings around conduits greater than 2 inch.

Eliminating rats is a community effort. If you have rats, it is very likely that your neighbors also have rats. A successful and sustained rat control program requires vigilance on the part of the entire community.
