Nuisance Wildlife and Animal Control in Sunset Harbor

An alligator in the vicinity of Holiday Recreation Complex has eluded a trapper so far while an area woman urges the county to do more to warn people about the reptile 7 to 8 feet long.

"He's a pretty big guy," an area resident, Judith S., said about the gator. She wants parents of children playing at the recreation complex to be made more aware of the unwanted guest.

On Feb. 26, county officials said the gator had been hanging out at a remote retention pond, sunning on its banks from time to time. The beast appears to shy away from people. Still, phone calls prompted the county to arrange for a trapper through a state hotline to check into the situation.

Schultz has been talking with Mike G., the area supervisor of County Parks and Recreation Department.

A trapper first checked the area Feb. 28 but didn't find the beast, Mike said Wednesday.

"I found that hard to believe," Judy S. replied.

The trapper told Mike he would come back periodically this week to try to spot the reptile.

On sunny days the gator seems to come out of the pond to warm himself, Mike G. added.

Park officials are keeping watch for now.

"My hands are tied what the state will do for us," Mike G. commented. The state-licensed trapper would have to determine if the gator is considered a nuisance to be removed or destroyed.

Mike G. utilized the state's toll-free hot line, 1-866-392-4286, for reporting nuisance alligators.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission explains more on nuisance gators on its Web site.
